The fastest charger for your iPhone 13

0

The fastest charger for your iPhone 13? Know what’s frustrating, Unboxing your iPhone 13 (or any recent iPhone for that matter), removing the USB-C Lightning cable and then remembering that Apple no longer includes a wall adapter with any model.

If it’s been a few years since you upgraded your iPhone, odds are you don’t have a USB-C wall plug to work with your new USB-C Lightning cable. And while your old iPhone charger will still work, it’s not going to fast charge your iPhone 13 — an important feature if you’re running short on battery life and time.

To help narrow down which 20-watt USB-C wall adapter works best with the iPhone, we put several of them to the test and picked out the ones that are worth your money.

The iPhone 13’s performance is closely aligned with the iPhone 12. Power users will notice that photo exports finish faster and gaming is a bit more seamless. The camera, both physically and with the software, does offer a noticeable improvement. Those with an iPhone 11 or older, though, will see a more noticeable speed improvement with using apps and taking photos and not notice a slowdown in everyday or intense use. While you still can’t use two apps at once, having many open in the background won’t slow down performance or decrease the battery.

The fastest charger for your iPhone 13

For just under $30, you can pick up Nomad’s 30W USB-C AC Power Adapter. Even though it provides 30W of charging power, it won’t charge the iPhone 13 any faster than Apple’s USB-C Power Adapter or the Anker Nano Pro. In our testing, the Apple logo showed up after 2 minutes and 57 seconds — the longest amount of time out of all our tests — but at the 90-minute mark, the iPhone 13 had a charge of 98%.

What we like about the Nomad 30W charger is that it provides a little extra power to charge the rest of your gadgets, like a Nintendo Switch or iPad Pro, faster than the 20W offerings we covered here.

Nomad’s charger uses GaN (gallium nitride) technology inside to help keep the charger small while also preventing it from getting too hot while in use.

Others we tested The fastest charger for your iPhone 13

Belkin USB-PD GaN 30W Charger ($30 $20, amazon.com)

Belkin’s 30W adapter packs extra power and charged the iPhone 13 to 98% after 90 minutes of charge time. Like Nomad’s offering, the Belkin GaN charger uses the new tech to keep its size down and prevent it from overheating while charging your phone.

Anker 511 Nano ($19, amazon.com)

The 511 Nano is another 20W charger from Anker and is also available in several different colors. It charged the iPhone 13 from empty to 96% battery life after 90 minutes. It’s compact and even though it didn’t charge as fast as our top picks, it’s only a difference of 3% — which isn’t really a deal breaker.

The fastest charger for your iPhone 13
The fastest charger for your iPhone 13

Anker Nano II 45W ($40, amazon.com)

The Nano II 45W is the most powerful charger we tested, and yet, it’s also the slowest when it comes to charging the iPhone 13. After 90 minutes the iPhone’s battery had a charge of 96% — nothing to be mad at. It uses GaN technology to keep it small while still providing 45W of power, which is more than enough for phones, tablets and even some laptops.

How we tested

Our exact testing procedure started with a completely empty iPhone battery. We would start a timer the moment we connected the iPhone 13 to power, watching for the Apple logo to show up on the iPhone’s screen and noting the time. Once the phone fully turned on, we unlocked it and left it connected to Wi-Fi. Then we noted the charge level of the iPhone every 15 minutes for 90 minutes. We would then stream a YouTube video to drain the iPhone’s battery and repeat the process for each charger. We used the same Nomad USB-C Lightning cable for every test in an effort to eliminate any unnecessary variables.

We’ve tested every iPhone — here are the best ones

Apple currently sells a whopping eight different iPhones, including the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, the flagship iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the budget-minded iPhone SE and some older holdouts like the iPhone 12 and 13. Confused? That’s where we come in.

Why is the iPhone is the best?

iPhones are good phones that are high quality, as is the software they run. iPhones generally have a reputation of being durable and long-lasting on the hardware front (my iPhone 4S lasted me 5 years and still turns on), and smooth and optimized on the software end.

We’ve tested every iPhone model extensively, and have picked out the models that are actually worth buying — and who they’re for — out of Apple’s vast lineup. Ready? Let’s dive in.

The iPhone 14 looks and feels a whole lot like the previous iPhone 13 model and that’s not entirely a bad thing. The lighter 6-ounce iPhone 14 is the kind of device that feels great to pick up and hold. And while its aluminum design isn’t quite as strong and sturdy as the stainless steel iPhone 14 Pro, it certainly doesn’t feel cheap.

The iPhone 14 has an upgraded dual-lens camera system that’s enhanced by some fancy new software magic called the Photonic Engine. To make it simple: The new iPhone is designed to capture wider, more detailed photos (particularly for moving subjects), offers improved flash, promises far better low-light photography and can even auto-stabilize your shaky videos. In real-world use, this all translated to a camera that was a joy to use during daily adventures.

The iPhone 14 is more of the same on the display and performance front, which is to say that it still has a beautiful screen and is still ridiculously fast as with other Apple models. Movies and shows looked great on the phone’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, particularly while taking in the crackling neon blues, reds and yellows that filled the screen during the epic final battle of “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” The iPhone 14’s display remains a fantastic canvas for bingeing TV and catching up on your TikTok feed.

The iPhone 14 is more evolution than revolution; an entry-level phone takes fantastic pictures, can last all day on a charge and packs a great display, all within a beautiful and lightweight design that feels good to use for hours at a time, and it’s still faster than the vast majority of phones you can buy.

The iPhone 14 Pro

Best iPhone for photography: iPhone 14 Pro

The iPhone 14 Pro doesn’t look too different from the previous 13 Pro when it’s turned off, but once the screen lights up, you immediately notice the notch has moved down, slightly, and now lives within the screen. Well, technically, it’s not called a notch. Instead of letting users and the media name the new cutout that houses the FaceID TrueDepth sensors and front-facing camera, Apple dubbed it the Dynamic Island.

But instead of simply delivering a less distracting camera cutout, Apple has built a software experience around this new module — and it’s where Dynamic Island truly earns its name.

The Dynamic Island is used as an interactive area, where you can view any Now Playing information from media apps like Spotify or Apple Music. You’ll also see information such as the volume status of your connected AirPods, a new FaceID unlock animation, or a timer icon when you have an active countdown going. The Dynamic Island can even display two icons at once, so you can, say, view your current song and the status of your timer at the same time.

Perhaps the most notable difference in the iPhone 14 lineup is the camera, which is one of the biggest upgrades we’ve seen in an iPhone. The main camera sensor goes from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels, while the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras stay at 12 megapixels. Photos look slightly sharper, with more accurate colors and detail. And Apple has added a new Action video mode to the camera app. When enabled, the camera acts more like a dedicated action camera — GoPro or otherwise — to capture stabilized footage recording during activities with a lot of movement.

The camera upgrades on the iPhone 14 are more iterative than substantial, but the upgrades on the iPhone 14 Pro are setting the tone for iPhone cameras for years to come.

Best budget iPhone: iPhone SE 2022

If you want modern iPhone performance but don’t want to spend $1,000 on a new phone — or just prefer something smaller — the iPhone SE 2022 is for you. Apple’s $429 iPhone makes very few compromises in the power department, packing the same speedy A15 Bionic processor you’ll find on the latest iPhone 13 range. You’ll have no issues multitasking between apps or playing the newest iOS games here.

The SE is also the smallest iPhone in the lineup, packing all of that power into a 4.7-inch design that’s especially ideal for those with small hands (or small pockets). The design is reminiscent of the iPhones of old, which means some pretty thick display bezels at the top and bottom, but also a Touch ID fingerprint sensor you won’t find on more premium models. Its Retina HD display looks great for watching movies and playing games, and while it doesn’t have the same two- to three-camera arrays of the iPhone 13 series, its single 12-megapixel lens captures solid photos — and has the ability to shoot in Portrait mode for professional-looking headshots.

So, what are you giving up at this price? The iPhone SE’s display isn’t as big or as seamless as what you’ll find on the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, and it lacks the latter’s ProMotion technology that allows for extra-smooth scrolling and streaming at 120Hz. You also won’t get MagSafe capabilities for magnetically attaching compatible chargers and cases, nor will you be able to unlock your phone with your face via Face ID. But if you can live without having the most advanced camera system, the sleekest design or the biggest screen, the iPhone SE is a compact, great-performing iPhone that will last you for years — and at a fraction of the price of an iPhone 13.

Oldies but goodies you should still consider

iPhone 13

From $599 at Apple

The iPhone 13 checks off the core boxes in a size that lets you get a lot done. The 6.1-inch screen size is plenty big for browsing webpages, scrolling through timelines and, more crucially, using the keyboard. Plus, the iPhone 13 features one of the best dual-camera systems we’ve ever tested, consisting of a 12-megapixel wide lens and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. The 13 is only bested by the newer iPhone 14 model as our top pick

iPhone 13 Pro

From $1,179 at Amazon

Our previous pick for the best iPhone for photography iPhone 13 Pro has a trio of lenses are paired with a buttery smooth and vibrant display, class-leading performance and seriously long battery life.

iPhone 12

Currently unavailable at Apple

Technically the iPhone 12 isn’t that old, at less than a year. But with the launch of the iPhone 13, Apple has reduced the cost of the iPhone 12 to a starting price of $699.

And let’s be clear — the A14 Bionic processor that powers the iPhone 12 is nearly as fast as the one in the iPhone 13. It’s really a nominal upgrade that boosts efficiency and results in applications opening slightly faster. The iPhone 12 is plenty fast enough for everyday tasks and for gaming. More processor-intensive tasks, like batch exports or video editing, will see boosts in the newer iPhone 13, though. We’d also hedge that the iPhone 13 will keep ticking a bit longer than the iPhone 12 as the devices age.

One potential downside for opting for the iPhone 12 model is that the base storage amount starts at 64GB, while the iPhone 13 lineup starts at 128GB; 64GB is pretty slim, and if you have a large photo library, lots of songs downloaded or a large amount of apps you’ll likely get a storage alert sooner than later, so the iPhone 13 would be a better choice for those who tend to hoard digital files on their phone.

The iPhone 12 offers a good camera experience. You won’t get the new Cinematic video or Macro mode that the iPhone 13 has, but you’re still getting two rear-facing 12-megapixel cameras — one wide, the other ultrawide. Both offer crisp details and accurate colors, but if you’re keen on photography you’ll notice the 13 does a better job lighting the shot. With shots taken on the iPhone 13, there’s clearer depth between the foreground and background, like for a classic shot of someone in front of a sunset. Still, you’re getting a very capable shooter in the iPhone 12.

Both phones run iOS 15, the latest operating system from the iPhone, and are sure to remain supported for years to come. That’s good news, since it’s still a hefty price and you don’t want to invest in a phone that won’t be supported in a few years.

iPhone 11

From $359 at Amazon

If you still want a modern iPhone 11 with a nearly bezel-free screen and Face ID for easy unlocking, the iPhone 11 is an affordable option that mixes solid performance and modern features — all at a more manageable $499 for the 64GB model ($549 for 128GB).

The key difference between the iPhone 11 and newer models is that it opts for a 6.1-inch LCD screen instead of an OLED. It’s not as bright or crisp as newer models, but it still offers a clear viewing experience that ultimately extends the battery life.

There are two rear cameras on the back of the iPhone 11, one for ultrawide shots — a favorite feature of ours — and a standard camera, both of which are 12 megapixels. Images offer a strong amount of details and are still Instagram-worthy but don’t offer the level of details the iPhone 13 can deliver. Low-light shots are lackluster in comparison with ones taken on any of the newer models.

All in all, the iPhone 11 is a worthy pick for those who want a modern design with Face ID and are shopping on a specific budget.

How to sell or trade in a phone

When it comes to upgrading to a newer iPhone, you’ll likely want to get some cash or trade-in value for your current model. It’s an easy way to close the gap, especially as a new iPhone can cost a hefty amount of dough. Luckily, there are several services out there that make trading in a phone relatively easy.

You’ll generally start by selecting your model, noting its condition, answering a few other questions and then see an estimated value for the device. If you choose to send the device in, you’ll lock in that value and the service will provide you with a shipping label to send your device back in. After they receive it, they’ll check it over and update the value if need be. You’ll confirm and they’ll pass the money to you. We’d recommend using a service like Decluttr. (With Decluttr, you can currently score an extra 10% on your trade-in value with code CNN2021. It’s capped at $50, but it’s a nice bonus.) It’s Worth More or Gazelle are two other services that we’ve personally used as well.

iPhone sales are Dropping. Here’s why

0

Apple’s smartphone sales tumbled a stunning 10% last quarter, according to market research firm IDC. The main cause: iPhone sales in China fell sharply.

The company has lost momentum in China as nationalism, a rough economy and increased competition have hurt Apple over the past several months.

“It’s a steep drop for Apple, but if you think of where we have been in the past four years, Apple has probably been the most resilient brand, overcoming supply chain issues and macro challenges, more than other brands,” said Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, told CNN.

Samsung had been the top smartphone manufacturer for the past 12 years. Apple took the crown last year – but only for one quarter. Samsung took the top spot back in the first quarter of 2024, IDC reported.

“It’s also very significant that Samsung is back at the top,” Popal said. “This year, we are expecting Android to grow at twice the pace of iOS.” (Android is the operating system used by Samsung systems, while iPhones use iOS.)

That’s because Android had a strong decline over the past few years, so it has more room to grow now. Both Apple and Samsung did not respond to a request for comment.

Overall, IDC said global smartphone shipments increased 7.8% year over year to about 289 million devices in the first quarter of 2024, indicating the smartphone market is reemerging after two years of macroeconomic challenge.

Samsung occupied about 20.8% of market share (or 60.1 million shipments) during the quarter, followed by Apple with 17.3% (50.1 million shipments). Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi made up 14.1% (40.8 million shipments).

In December, Apple overtook Samsung as the highest performer in the smartphone category, ending Samsung’s 12-year run at the top, with 20% market share (compared to Samsung’s 19.4% market share).

Although IDC said in its latest report that it expects Apple and Samsung to maintain their hold on the market, the resurgence of Huawei and other companies in China, including Xiaomi and OPPO/OnePlus, will likely continue. Chinese consumers who once would have considered Apple are now turning to national brands in China.

China remains an important market for Apple as it is the largest market behind the US. The company continues to offer discounts in China to help boost sales.

Last year, Huawei’s popular Mate 60 smartphone made headlines when the US government sought more information about the Pro model, which included a sophisticated processor. Its debut shocked industry experts who questioned how the company could make such a chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign chip technology because of perceived national security concerns.

Popal also noted Apple has not articulated a strong message about artificial intelligence, at a time when many tech companies are doubling down on related strategies and features.

We’re hoping to hear some messaging around this at its June developer conference,” she said. “We’re hopeful if they do provide something for the consumers … they should gain more interest that they’ve seen challenges with.”

Samsung, however, has already gone all in on AI. For its most recent flagship Galaxy S24 lineup, which was announced in January, the company emphasized bringing AI advancements to its messaging, photos and games.

“As the overall smartphone market recovers this year, with a strong focus on AI, Samsung is in good position to grow further this year,” she added.

USA President Biden urged to ban China-made electric vehicles

0

President Joe Biden has been urged to ban imports of Chinese-made electric cars to the US.

The chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Sherrod Brown, wrote “Chinese electric vehicles are an existential threat to the American auto industry”.

His comments are the strongest yet by any US lawmaker on the issue, while others have called for steep tariffs to keep Chinese electric vehicles (EV) out of the country.

In February, the White House said the US was investigating whether Chinese cars pose a national security risk.

“We cannot allow China to bring its government-backed cheating to the American auto industry”, Senator Brown said in a video on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Senator Brown, who is a Democrat from the the car-producing state of Ohio, is seeking to win a fourth term in office in November’s election.

The White House did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

In February, President Biden said that China’s policies “could flood our market with its vehicles, posing risks to our national security” and that he would “not let that happen on my watch.”

Washington could impose restrictions over concerns that the technology in Chinese-made cars could “collect large amounts of sensitive data on their drivers and passengers”, the White House said.

USA President Biden urged to ban China-made electric vehicles

It warned cars that are connected to the internet “regularly use their cameras and sensors to record detailed information on US infrastructure; interact directly with critical infrastructure; and can be piloted or disabled remotely”.

China is the world’s largest producer of cars and vying with Japan to be the biggest exporter of vehicles.

The number of Chinese cars on US roads is, however, extremely low due to the fact the latter currently imposes a 27.5% tariff on the vehicles.

This week, while on a trip to China, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned Beijing that Washington would not allow a repeat of the “China shock” of the early 2000s, when Chinese imports flooded into America.

In response, China’s vice finance minister, Liao Min, expressed “grave concern” over restrictions the US has imposed on trade and investment.

Mr Liao said China’s competitive advantages are due to its “large-scale market, complete industrial system and abundant human resources”.

Also on Thursday, America’s biggest airlines asked the Biden administration to halt approvals of new flights between the US and China.

In a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Transportation Department Secretary Pete Buttigieg they said China’s “damaging anti-competitive policies” put US carriers at a disadvantage.

“If the growth of the Chinese aviation market is allowed to continue unchecked and without concern for equality of access in the market, flights will continue to be relinquished to Chinese carriers at the expense of US workers and businesses.”

The world’s two biggest economies have been locked in a trade war since 2018 when the then-Trump administration imposed tariffs on more than $360bn (£287bn) of Chinese goods.

Beijing retaliated with tariffs on more than $110bn of US products.

President Joe Biden has largely kept those tariffs in place.

Last year the value of goods the US bought from China fell by just over 20% to $427bn. At the same time, US exports to China dipped by 4% to just under $148bn.

American wife, 44, dies after ‘extreme sex’ as cops arrest her husband, 50, claiming ‘risky practises’ during their vacation in Spain after finding drugs in the flat

American wife, 44, dies after ‘extreme sex’ as cops arrest her husband, 50, claiming ‘risky practises’ during their vacation in Spain after finding drugs in the flat.

  • The husband was arrested for reckless homicide on April 6
  • The case has since been upgraded to homicide, according to local reports
  • The body was discovered in Plaza Enrique Garcia Herrera, Malaga, on Saturday

An American woman was found dead in an apartment after partaking in ‘extreme sex’ before cops arrested her husband after finding drugs in the flat during their vacation in Spain.

The body of the woman, 44, was discovered inside a tourist apartment located in Plaza Enrique Garcia Herrera, Malaga, on April 6, after the husband alerted authorities.

Spanish police quickly arrested her husband, 50, as sources close to the case revealed to local media that the death may have been related to some ‘extreme sexual practices’ that the pair were involved in.

The husband was arrested for reckless homicide following the woman’s death.

According to local reports, the case was being investigated as gender-based violence, before being upgraded to homicide since the current evidence points to an accidental death during extreme or risky sexual practices in an ‘intimate context’.

However, local media has stated that new procedures carried out by investigators led to detectives believing that these would place the events in a context of sexist violence.

Sources told Diario Sur that the couple had spent several days in the tourist accommodation, and that a search of the flat turned up substances that led investigators to believe that they had been engaging in sex games while on drugs.

On Monday, the 50-year-old stood before a judge at the Investigative Court number 9 of Malaga, who ordered the suspect’s provisional detention without bail, according to Spanish press.

Judicial sources confirmed to La Opinion De Malaga, that the case will now be taken on by the Violence Against Women Court, due to the nature of the case.

The events emerged last Saturday when local police were alerted to the unresponsive woman in an Airbnb style flat located the historic center of the city.

Medics who rushed to the property could reportedly only certify the death of the tourist, at which point the National Police took over the investigation to figure out the cause.

The body was then transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine to undergo an autopsy and forensic study.

If the sexist motivation is confirmed, it would be the third fatality of its kind in Malaga so far this year.

The Spanish National Police are continuing their investigations into the case.
